Close to Home | Kelsey and Kyle Kent Find Their Place in Sedgefield

For Kelsey Callaghan Kent and Kyle Kent, moving to Sedgefield meant returning to family, settling into a place already filled with familiar faces, and creating a home where travel stories, good food and seven rescued cats are all part of everyday life.

When Kelsey Callaghan Kent and Kyle Kent moved to Sedgefield in August 2025, they weren’t exactly arriving somewhere unfamiliar. Kelsey grew up in Greensboro, and with her parents, aunt and uncle already living in the neighborhood, the move brought the couple closer to the people who mattered most.
Since then, the family circle has only continued to grow. Kelsey’s brother and sister-in-law, along with her cousin, are currently renovating homes in the neighborhood, making Sedgefield feel increasingly like a family gathering place.
Before coming home to Greensboro, Kelsey and Kyle lived in Columbia, South Carolina—the city where their story together began. They met on Bumble, and their relationship eventually led them from South Carolina to Sedgefield, with plenty of adventures along the way.
Different Paths, A Shared Home
Kelsey attended the University of South Carolina, where she studied exercise science before earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University. Today, she works as a veterinarian at Banfield Pet Hospital on New Garden Road, caring for animals from Greensboro and the surrounding community.
Kyle took a different route after high school, joining the Navy and later completing online coursework to become a data analyst. He now works from home in IT.
Their interests are just as varied. Kelsey loves baking—particularly macarons, decorated sugar cookies, cakes and cupcakes—while Kyle enjoys cooking and gathers with friends for a weekly Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Together, they work out in their home gym and share a love of traveling, discovering new foods and experiencing different cultures.
That sense of adventure recently took them to Boston for the World Cup, where they attended four games with Kelsey’s parents, brother and sister-in-law. A lifelong soccer fan who played from age 3 to 18, Kelsey needed little convincing. Kyle, she says with a smile, is “learning to love it.”
Travel has become one of their favorite ways to celebrate milestones, too. For their honeymoon and first wedding anniversary, the couple spent nine days exploring Iceland, where they saw the northern lights and sampled memorable food along the way. This September, Kelsey will continue another longtime tradition when she travels to New York with her mother and aunt for the US Open, an outing they have enjoyed for more than 15 years.
A House Full of Rescues
At home, the Kents share their space with a remarkable feline family: Riesling, Merlot, Pharoh, Blue, Mama, Gypsy and Ethel. Each was rescued, and nearly every adoption comes with a story.
Riesling and Merlot joined Kelsey during her clinical year of veterinary school in Baton Rouge. Kyle rescued Blue as a tiny kitten while working as a police officer, after finding him while on patrol. Mama entered their lives after arriving at Kelsey’s workplace with three kittens, while Gypsy needed a new home when other cats in her previous household became aggressive toward her.
Ethel originally came home with her sister, Lucy, so Lucy could receive chemotherapy after being diagnosed with lymphoma. Lucy passed away at age 2, but Ethel remained part of the family.
Together, the cats make for a busy household—and a fitting reflection of the couple’s soft spot for animals in need.
Family, Food and the View Outside
Though still relatively new to Sedgefield, Kelsey and Kyle are already enjoying its rhythms. They visit the Greensboro Science Center, including its adults-only events, browse the farmers market and enjoy relaxing outside at Box Seat when the weather cooperates.
Some of their favorite moments, however, happen right at home. In May, they hosted a baby shower for Kelsey’s best friend, and Kelsey’s mother is known for bringing everyone together for Fourth of July celebrations.
Their backyard offers its own kind of entertainment. A small lake behind the house attracts birds, ducks and geese, while deer frequently wander down toward the water.
For two people who love traveling the world, there is something especially meaningful about having so much of what they value right outside their door: nature, connection and, most importantly, family.
“We love seeing all the deer and other wildlife in our area,” Kelsey says.
But what makes Sedgefield truly feel like home is simpler: “Our favorite part is being so close to our family.”
