From Golf Partners to Lifelong Companions
How a Friendly Game Led Amy and Scott Ochs to Love, Family, and a Lifetime of Shared Adventures.
Amy and Scott Ochs met while in a work golf league. Amy was a beginner, and Scott was a better player, so the two were paired up. They ended up winning the league championship and decided to give dating a shot. They married and had a daughter, Mallory, who is now married to Zach Shearon and has two children, Kennedy (10) and Maxwell (9).
For work, Amy had a career in corporate communications and public relations. She retired after a 30-year career at Raytheon, an aerospace defense contractor. Scott worked in manufacturing leadership, and retired from Sherwin Williams after 20 years. It didn’t take long to see that he wasn’t quite ready for retired life, so he went back into the work force and is with the new Toyota battery plant in Liberty, North Carolina.
Hobbies & Traditions
Travel has always been important to the Ochs family. They take several trips a year to visit their grandchildren in Colorado, or their grandkids come to Sedgefield in the summer to spend time with them and participate in summer camps at the country club. They’ve been to visit Europe and Australia, and countries like Canada, Chile and Mexico. The Ochs family loves to head to their beach house in Pine Knoll Shores whenever they can.
“Golf is our family hobby,” Scott shares. “We are members of the Sedgefield men's and women's golf associations and participate in many of the different golf events sponsored by the club. We love to take advantage of the variety of golf clubs associated with McConnell Golf and have taken trips to those clubs with friends from Sedgefield Country Club.”
They recently joined Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham to improve their game even more, and they’ve also traveled to places like Scotland, Ireland, Arizona, Florida and Colorado to enhance their golf experience!
When the two have some alone time, Scott loves to work on his classic cars and garden, and Amy loves beading, sewing and crafting, but her favorite “hobby” is that she is a certified tribal artisan with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.
Community Involvement
The Ochs family works with numerous organizations, like the Albertson Parkinson's Research Foundation and the Salvation Army Angel Tree. Amy is also a member of the Sedgefield Women’s Club and volunteers with their fundraising activities whenever she can.
When it comes to Sedgefield, it’s a place they never thought they’d retire. After Scott had transferred to the area for work, they quickly realized that North Carolina was home.
“North Carolina has everything we looked for in a place to settle down: great people, four seasons, a variety of locales (beach, mountains); proximity to great destinations, like Washington, D.C., South Carolina and Florida.”
Their neighbors have been in the neighborhood for many years, making where they live all the more special. For those new, the Ochs family suggest meeting as many people as you can by going to the golf course, participating in local events or taking strolls throughout the neighborhood!
