Martin Artisans Guild
Decade of Art, Built by a Community of Artists
Step inside one of Martin County's best-kept secrets: The Palm Room Art Gallery & Artisans Boutique, produced by Martin Artisans Guild, a working artist cooperative that has spent the last decade quietly becoming one of the county's most vibrant cultural institutions. Nestled in the tranquil tropical foliaged atrium of Harbour Bay Plaza in Sewall's Point, 2026 marks ten years since it all began.
From Friends Supporting Friends to a Formal Nonprofit
The story starts small. Professional and emerging artists across Martin County kept running into the same problem: they wanted to exhibit their work, support one another, and reach the public, but building a gallery, marketing plan, and events calendar individually was a lot to ask of any one artist. What couldn’tbe done alone could be done together.
What began as informal gatherings — friends supporting friends — became a formally incorporated nonprofit in 2017. Two years later, in 2019, that group secured its own home: The Palm Room Art Gallery & Artisans Boutique in Sewall's Point. This year, that makes ten years as a nonprofit and eight years of gallery programming, a decade built on a simple idea: that artists who share the cost and labor of running a professional gallery can spend more time creating and less time on overhead.
Today, the Martin Artisans Guild is a volunteer-run cooperative of more than 50 member professional artists, living and working throughout Stuart, Palm City, Port Salerno, Jensen Beach, Hobe Sound, and Sewall's Point, many of whom have called Martin County home for decades. Its mission hasn't drifted far from where it started: nurture fine art and craft, raise awareness of local artists, build connections among working artists, and create real marketing and exhibition venues for its members.
What Makes It a *Cooperative*
Every piece that hangs in The Palm Room has been juried by fellow professional artists — which means visitors aren't just browsing; they're encountering museum-quality work in every exhibit, spanning styles and price points to fit any decor, budget, or occasion. Whether you're after a small original for a bookshelf or a statement piece for the living room, it's there. The Artisans Boutique rounds things out with handcrafted jewelry and gifts made by member artists, so there's always a one-of-a-kind find for yourself or someone you love.
Between the gallery, six rotating juried exhibits each year, and the Guild's flagship Martin County Open Studio Tour, the public gets several different ways to actually meet the artists behind the work — not just see it finished on a wall, but talk to the hands that made it.
More Than a Gallery — A Local Economic Engine
It's easy to think of a nonprofit art gallery as “nice-to-have”. The numbers say otherwise. Arts and culture organizations like the Guild generate real, measurable value for Martin County: local arts activity is estimated to contribute $27.2 million to the local economy each year, support 752 full-time equivalent jobs, and deliver $3 million in local and state government revenue. The Guild's own programming — the gallery and the Open Studio Tour — is estimated to generate over $230,000 in related local spending on dining, lodging, shopping, and transportation. And that's before counting the harder-to-measure part: neighbors and visitors brought together around art, education, and creativity.
Buying local, original art is one of the most direct ways to support that ecosystem. Every purchase supports a working artist's studio practice, and through the Guild's cooperative model, helps fund the exhibitions and events that keep Martin County's arts scene thriving.
Traditions Worth Marking on Your Calendar
The Guild's rhythm is built around bringing people together over art. Every new exhibit opens with a First Wednesday Reception (5:30–7:30 pm) — small bites, a cash bar, and a room full of new work — followed a month later by a more intimate "Meet the Artists" mini-reception.
The holiday season kicks off with “’Tis the Sea-son”, running November 4 -January 2. Catch the Opening Reception on November 4 (5:30–7:30 pm) and the Meet the Artists reception on December 2. Alongside the exhibit, don't miss the annual ornament sale, where Guild artists donate handmade ornaments, with proceeds helping fund Guild activities. New this year, visitors can also pick up the first-ever Martin Artisans Guild Artist Calendar, a curated sampling of member artwork throughout the year.
Looking Ahead
Mark your calendars for the Martin County Open Studio Tour, February 27–28, 2027 — a free, self-guided weekend where the public can visit artists' studios across Martin County, watch live demonstrations, and buy directly from the artists themselves. Seeing where and how a piece is actually made changes how you see the finished work. It's the best way to find not just a piece of art, but an artist whose work truly speaks to you.
It all kicks off with a Preview Night at the Elliott Museum on February 11, 2027, 5:30-7:30, an elegant night of music and small bites, where you get to see samples of art that will be presented on the Tour. Detailed tour guides will be available at The Palm Room Art Gallery and online at www.martinartisansguild.org.
