Youth of the Year Ambassadors

Kicking off its 20th year of Building Brighter Futures through its Scholarship Program!

Judi McGee - Founder of YOYSP

The Youth of the Year Ambassadors are honored to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Youth of the Year Scholarship Program (YOYSP). Since its founding in 2005, this life-changing program has opened doors for students ages 12–18 from The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Youth Centers—formerly the Boys & Girls Clubs—helping them pursue their dreams of higher education. For many, YOYSP has been the stepping stone to becoming the first in their families to attend college.

On September 13th, the Ambassadors joyfully kicked off this milestone year with 85 bright, hopeful students enrolled. From September through February, these students will gather on Saturdays for training sessions led by dedicated Ambassadors—volunteers who serve as mentors, educators, and community leaders. Together, they’ll build confidence in writing, public speaking, and leadership while walking step by step through the college application process.

The impact is profound. In 2024 alone, YOYSP awarded $300,000 in scholarships to 60 deserving students. Every young person who completes the program receives scholarship support—made possible only through the kindness of community sponsors and the unwavering commitment of the Ambassadors.

This anniversary year will culminate in a very special celebration: the annual banquet on March 5, 2026, where students, families, and supporters will come together to honor these remarkable achievements.

The Youth of the Year Scholarship Program continues to thrive because of generous hearts. To learn how you or your organization can make a difference in shaping the next generation, please reach out to francesvhoward@gmail.com.
