Meet Eli: The Neighborhood Watcher with a Nose for Cheese

For 26 years, Lee and Kathy Harrow have called the neighborhood home, cherishing the kind and supportive neighbors who make it such a special place. Adding even more warmth to their household is Eli, a lovable Golden Retriever who will turn five this July.

Eli joined the family in the sweetest way. When their daughter learned of a puppy in need of a new home, they met at a Gretna park to see him. At just 10 weeks old, Eli’s irresistible charm made the decision easy—he was meant to be part of the family.

Known for his calm and friendly nature, Eli enjoys spending time in the yard, happily watching neighbors pass by. But don’t let his relaxed demeanor fool you—he has a playful side too. One of his favorite games is “keep away,” where he proudly parades around with a toy before finally dropping it for another round of fetch. Balls and tug-of-war ropes top his list of favorites.

Eli also has a hilarious and impressive “talent”—a sixth sense for cheese. The moment the refrigerator drawer opens, no matter how fast asleep he was, Eli appears instantly, ready for a slice.

Some of the family’s favorite memories come from Eli’s younger days, when he would zoom around the house at full speed, circling the pool table, racing up the stairs, and playfully bouncing around their legs in a burst of joyful energy.

These days, Eli enjoys greeting fellow neighborhood dogs, especially when they stop by for a friendly sniff. He also loves walks at Mahoney State Park and the Gretna Reserve, where every scent is an adventure. For Eli, the perfect day is simple—just say “park,” and he’s ready to go!
