When John and Vicki built their home in Tiburon in 2018, they were drawn to the neighborhood’s beautiful surroundings, convenient location, and proximity to family. What they didn’t know then was that a tiny, tricolored pup would soon become the heart of their household.

Teddy Bear, a nearly six-year-old male Biewer (pronounced “beaver”) Yorkie, joined the family after Vicki spent months researching dog breeds that shared some of the independent qualities of cats. After losing two beloved cats who lived to the remarkable age of 20, the couple wanted a pet that could travel more easily with them between Nebraska and Arizona.

Their search led them to a local Omaha breeder, where they met two brother puppies. The choice became easy when one cuddly little pup immediately snuggled into their arms. “He looked just like a little teddy bear,” Vicki recalls. The name stuck.

Though small in stature, Teddy has a personality that fills the room. Loyal, playful, and incredibly smart, he understands so many words that John and Vicki often resort to spelling things out to avoid triggering excitement about walks, shopping trips, or treats. Each evening, Teddy faithfully participates in his favorite bedtime ritual: fetching a small ball in exchange for a snack.

Known as a “snuggle bunny” by his owners, Teddy is happiest when spending time with his family. He loves exploring Chalco Hills Recreation Area, keeping watch for deer, and barking at passing runners and cyclists. One of the family’s favorite memories is taking him to Amelia Island, where he delighted in beach walks and meeting giant land tortoises.

If Teddy could choose his next adventure, however, he’d likely return to White Sands National Park, where he happily raced across the soft gypsum dunes. For a dog with such a big spirit, the wide-open landscape was the perfect playground.
