On June 4, Topsfield Scout Troop 81 gathered at Town Hall for an evening that celebrated achievement, service, and leadership. Family members, fellow Scouts, troop leaders, and community supporters filled the Public Hall for an Eagle Scout Court of Honor recognizing Robert Edward Connelly and Lance Ponikvar, the troop's newest Eagle Scouts. 

The Court of Honor is more than an awards ceremony. It marks the culmination of years of commitment and growth, recognizing young people who have demonstrated leadership, earned merit badges, completed extensive community service, and carried out significant projects that benefit others. Throughout the evening, speakers reflected on the Scouts' journeys, shared memories, and celebrated the values embodied in the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

As America marks its 250th anniversary in 2026, the ceremony offered a reminder that citizenship is not simply inherited—it is practiced. For generations, organizations like Scouting have helped prepare young people to serve their communities, lead with integrity, and contribute to something larger than themselves.

Troop 81 has a proud history of doing exactly that. Since 1976, more than 230 Topsfield Scouts have earned the rank of Eagle Scout, a distinction achieved by fewer than five percent of Scouts nationwide.

A 2025 graduate of Masconomet Regional High School and rising sophomore at Virginia Tech, Robert Connelly plans to study Civil Engineering with a minor in Urban Planning. His scouting journey began as a Bear Scout in Pack 81 and progressed through numerous leadership roles, including Senior Patrol Leader and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. Along the way, he attended Camp Squanto seven times and completed two treks at Philmont Scout Ranch. 

For his Eagle Scout project, Robert led the construction of two dugout roofs at Klock Park South. The project required coordination among volunteers, contractors, and community partners and resulted in 171 service hours. Today, athletes using the field have shelter from sun and weather thanks to his efforts. 

Lance Ponikvar, a graduating Masconomet senior, is currently dual enrolled at North Shore Community College and plans to continue his studies before transferring to UMass Amherst to pursue Business Administration. He joined Troop 81 after earning the Arrow of Light and quickly became involved in leadership roles within the troop. Among his favorite scouting experiences was a Philmont High Adventure Trek in 2024, though he says the friendships formed through scouting have been the most meaningful part of the journey. 

Lance's Eagle Scout project focused on restoring and beautifying the entrance area of the Emerson Center, longtime home of Troop 81. Working alongside fellow Scouts and community volunteers, he improved the property's appearance by clearing overgrowth, creating an additional entrance, and enhancing the grounds with gravel and landscaping improvements. The project leaves a lasting benefit for both the troop and the wider community. 

As America celebrates 250 years of citizenship and community, the achievements of Robert and Lance serve as a reminder that the next generation of leaders is already hard at work. Through service, initiative, and a commitment to making Topsfield a better place, these two Eagle Scouts have earned a distinction that will stay with them for life.
