Enzo the Magnificent: Westbrook’s Gentle Giant
After nearly a year in the neighborhood, Jeff and Patricia Zureick have grown to love the neighborhood’s welcoming feel, well-kept surroundings, and convenient location. At home, though, there’s one unmistakable star of the household — Enzo, their nine-year-old Maine Coon with a commanding presence and an even bigger personality.
Described affectionately as a “very large love machine,” Enzo embodies many of the traits that make Maine Coons such beloved companions. Friendly, interactive, and remarkably dog-like, he thrives on connection. He greets people warmly, befriends neighborhood dogs, and isn’t shy about expressing his opinions — especially when he believes his humans aren’t meeting expectations. Around the Zureick home, Enzo is both family member and self-appointed supervisor.
Enzo joined the family after the loss of two previous Maine Coons whose affectionate personalities left a lasting impression. When the time came to welcome another feline companion, they knew exactly what they were looking for. A breeder in Jacksonville described young Enzo as “full of himself” — a prediction that proved entirely accurate.
His name carries a sweet connection as well. Inspired by a charming little boy at their granddaughter’s preschool, the family chose Enzo for its warm, classic Italian feel — a fitting name for a cat with undeniable presence.
Life with Enzo is anything but ordinary. He’s known for communicating his needs clearly — and persistently — especially when it’s time for bed at precisely 10:30 p.m. or breakfast at exactly 5 a.m. Guests quickly discover they’ve been welcomed when Enzo inspects their bags, carefully checking the contents without taking a thing. His good manners extend to the home itself, where he’s never clawed the furniture — a rare and appreciated trait.
He also has a curious hobby: hunting golf balls in tall grass and proudly delivering them like prized trophies.
Despite his commanding personality, Enzo is deeply affectionate. He loves attention, enjoys soft toys sprinkled with catnip, and has a refined palate that requires two varieties of soft food served together. Outdoors, he explores only under supervision, preferring the backyard and lagoon area, where he’s begun getting acquainted with a neighbor dog named Arthur.
One of the family’s favorite memories perfectly captures Enzo’s charm. While preparing to cook spaghetti and meatballs one evening, Jeff set out two large pots in advance. When it was time to begin, he discovered Enzo comfortably curled up inside one — completely content and entirely unapologetic.
Whether supervising bedtime, greeting visitors, or spreading affection throughout the household, Enzo brings joy, humor, and a whole lot of personality to the Zureick family’s home. In a neighborhood that values warmth and connection, this gentle giant fits right in — even if he believes he’s the one in charge.
