From Island Rescue to Windward Home, Meet Chanel

A chance encounter on a Caribbean road led one Windward family to rescue a tiny puppy and discover a joyful new companion who now keeps the neighborhood on its toes.

The box found roadside in Curaçao

When Frank and Pam Carrington, longtime residents of The Bluffs in Windward, set out for the beach during a vacation in Curaçao, they had no idea the drive would lead to a rescue story that would follow them home. The Carringtons have lived in Windward for 31 years, and their quiet island detour would soon bring a new member into their household.

A small puppy suddenly ran in front of their car, and Frank stopped just in time. When they pulled over to check on her, they noticed something even more alarming. Just off the roadside sat a cardboard box filled with five more tiny puppies.

The Carringtons quickly contacted a local rescue organization and brought all six pups to safety. A veterinarian later determined the puppies were only four weeks old. The little dog who had run into the road was credited with saving the others, and the rescue team gave her the name Chanel.

“They said she did a beautiful thing,” Frank recalls. “By running in front of our car, she saved all the puppies’ lives.”

Bringing Chanel Home
Back home in Windward, the Carringtons could not stop thinking about her. They worked with the rescue group to complete the adoption process and arrange her trip to the United States. Eventually, a traveler flying to Pensacola from Curaçao volunteered to bring Chanel along in a carrier.

The Carringtons made the drive to meet her.

“That moment, picking her up in Pensacola and bringing her home, was unforgettable,” Frank says. “That is when Chanel officially became part of our family.”

Life in The Bluffs
Now nearly two years old, Chanel has grown into a lively mixed breed. DNA testing identified her as an American Village Dog, a common type found throughout Caribbean communities.

She also has a personality to match her adventurous beginning. “Chanel is always sitting on go,” Frank says with a laugh.

She loves to run, darting through the yard with impressive speed and quick turns that remind Frank of a football running back. Toys, treats, and neighborhood playtime all rank high on her list of favorite activities.

At home, Chanel shares life with the Carringtons’ Golden Retriever, Winston, mini Australian Shepherd, Tebow, and two cats. She also enjoys playtime with neighborhood friends Ace and Riley.
Some of her favorite outings include visits to the dog parks at Windward Sports Park and Webb Bridge Park, where she can run and meet other dogs. When the day winds down, Chanel enjoys a well-earned reward. A pup cup from Starbucks is always a favorite.

For the Carringtons, what began as a quick stop on a quiet island road turned into something far more meaningful. A rescued puppy found a home, and a Windward family gained an energetic companion who keeps life moving at full speed.
